One rarely knows what is good for us and what is bad. Therefore if we knowingly put ourselves in the hands of Almighty, whatever happens must be deemed good. And I try literally to follow that precept.

Glenn Beck on Obama’s Faith

With the tagline, “Why would any American think the president is Muslim?”, Glen Beck addresses Obama’s faith. Some key takeaways:

  1. Glen Beck does NOT believe that Obama is a Muslim. (Although 16% of people who do think Obama is a Muslim think that is true because of TV.)
  2. Jim Wallis is a Communist.
  3. “Most Christians” don’t recognize black liberation theology as a kind of Christianity.
  4. Similarly, “most Christians” don’t recognize a Christian’s faith if that faith is influenced by Eastern, Muslim, or Jewish ideas.
  5. Submission to God’s will is only a Muslim and explicitly not a Christian trait.
  6. Apologizing for haughty arrogance and hubris is also an un-Christian trait.
  7. Liberation theology is demonic, and there’s no such thing as communal sin and therefore no obligation for communal repentance.
  8. Obama’s faith is a perversion of the gospel.

Just thought all the theology students at Duke should know what this self-styled prophet of the Christian God is giving us on theology. The last few minutes are particularly enlightening.

BTW, here’s some evidence to support the claim I make about Glenn Beck’s self-identification as a prophet.

More evidence than Glenn Beck is willing to give for his claims, incidentally.

And maybe Glenn Beck should check out these lines from the “I Have a Dream” speech whose date he’s co-opting.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.

To be clear, since apparently it’s not: I’m not a Glenn Beck fan. I find that video rather shocking and offensive. And not just for the obvious reasons, like calling Jim Wallis a communist. (For the record, Jim Wallis worked with President Bush directly on anti-poverty issues until the relationship soured over the invasion of Iraq. His book, BTW, is subtitled “Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It”.)

Here’s a subtle example for you: the only way it makes sense to say “most Christians” don’t recognize black church theology and preaching is if he has defined Christians as a group where most have zero contact with the black church. In other words, he’s defined Christians as insular white people.

That said, Glenn Beck is one of the most influential commentators in contemporary America Christianity. He has a larger audience than any pastor and regularly uses that audience to address themes of religion and Christianity. That’s just a reality of the situation.
